Welcome to the Uni Life
Note from Yie Hahn:
To the initiated, I'm currently studying Aquatic Science and Resource Management at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak(UNIMAS) . This course was my second choice and if you read the last post you'd know my 1st. I consider my self lucky that I got a course that I'm genuinely interested in and not some irrelevant course with lots of maths in it. (The only maths in this course is Biological Statistics)
PS: UNIMAS is now my 1st choice. WHOOTS!!!! Unimas Gemilang!
Bellow is a video with some sights around UNIMAS
Its been a hectic week. Lectures have started and I'm beginning to finally experience campus life.(Pity those students who study in shoplots, office buildings and even shopping malls?!?!)
Orientation was a blast! 5 straight days of sleepless nights, early mornings, mad cheering, team building, games, refreshments and generally lots of fun! The Liaison Officers (LOs) were very helpful and sporting! I feared it would be RMC all over agian but my fears were unfounded.(they are very strict about ragging). It seems Sarawak really brings the best out of all of us. The people here are so friendly unlike in Semenanjung. The atmosphere is also so calm and refreshing plus the sky is different. I attribute it to cleaner air and less pollution! It really Is like being in a different country.
This orientation was especially special for me because I feel that Ive gone up a few levels in just a few days. I must really thank the LOs for giving me the chance plus the guidance to lead, motivate and bond with my fellow freshies. I don't think you even know how big an impact you made on me and for that, I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude towards you guys!
I actually cried during the last night because I know even though we are still studying In the same Uni, we will soon be parting out respective ways.
To be honest I think living conditions in UNIMAS beat those in other Universities hand down. Most of them practice communal style dormitories or are arranged hostel style. I heard Its really cramped, old and especially hot back home in semenanjung. I get a real warm and fuzzy feeling when I read all the blog posts, PMs, wall posts and shout outs proclaiming how uncomfortable life is for them.
Over here in Cempaka (my residential college) the facilities are up to my snobbish standards. We are divided into apartments. Each apartment has 4 rooms, 2 single rooms and 2 double rooms. We also have 2 toilets, 2 showers, a living room, a pantry, washing area and a balcony. I'm also lucky enough to be situated near the canteen so my Internet is lightning fast.(Fastest Ive recorded was 600 kb/ps) So I live the good life.
In my college alone we have futsal courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, 2 cafes, a recreational room, study rooms and even a gym! Laundry services are located in Bunga Raya which is just next door. The food selection is HUGE with each college having its own cafe plus the ever popular lakeview cafe, my culinary needs should be satisfied for the coming years.
All those are just facilities at the College level! At the Campus level we have a huge lake which can be used for water sports activities daily.(ie Kayak) We have a 10 lane bowling alley with 2 pool tables. There is also a climbing wall, bike rental services and many other things which I have yet to try. Not to mention a huge 5 story library which we call CAIS aka (The Centre for Academic Information Services)
Lectures have just started and im starting to feel the pressure. This semester I have 22 credit hours to accomplish. (one credit hour=1 hour of lectures per week/ 3 hours of lab per week)
And this doesn't count in the hours needed for practicals and assignments.
Well thats it from me today. I would post more pictures If my parents bought me a camera! Nudge...nudge... Anyways lectures start at 8 tomorrow. Till next time!
Missing You Guys!

Suggest you change the description on your subheader. Somehow "lifeless bum" doesn't seem to fit any more!
